Glasses that are clear indoors and turn dark to sunglasses when outdoors, on their own! Sounds magical right? It isn’t magic, it’s science! These types of lenses are called “photochromatic” lenses, best known by the brand name Transitions®. Photochromatic lenses block UV light, harmful blue light from screens, and protect the eyes from exposure to light associated with light sensitivity, migraine headaches, and squinting. When these lenses are exposed to UV light, the bonds between the carbon-based molecules in these special layered dyes adjust, and darken the lens. Similarly, when UV light exposure decreases, the bonds change back, and the lens becomes clear again. Photochromatic lenses are a great option for those that are light sensitive and/or do not want to carry multiple pairs of glasses around with them. Check them out today!
